The banshee is a female spirit from Irish folklore whose wailing announces a coming death in the family, sometimes before anyone has even heard the news. Her name means "woman of the fairy mound," and she haunts Ireland's oldest bloodlines, the Milesian families. She appears as a weeping woman combing her long hair, her cry carrying across the night. It is the same keening that mourning women once raised over the dead, except that the banshee raises it first.
