A ghost is the spirit of a dead person that returns to the world of the living, and belief in ghosts is nearly as old as humanity itself. They usually appear as pale, see-through figures, most often people who died violently or were buried improperly, and they haunt the places tied to their lives or their deaths. One of the oldest ghost stories on record is a letter by the Roman writer Pliny the Younger, describing a chained, bearded figure that walked a house in Athens. Many cultures shaped their funeral customs specifically to keep the dead from returning.
