The golden goose appears in two old European tales, both about the cost of greed. In Aesop's fable, a plain goose lays one golden egg each day until its impatient owners kill it to get all the gold at once, only to find nothing inside. In the version by the Brothers Grimm, the goose has feathers of solid gold, and anyone who touches it sticks fast. There it belongs to a kind, simple young man named Dummling, who drags a chain of stuck people through town until the sight makes a gloomy princess laugh and wins him her hand.
