The kelpie is a shapeshifting water spirit that haunts the rivers and lochs of Scotland. It usually appears as a fine grey horse standing at the water's edge, saddled and calm, exactly where a tired traveler would want it. The moment someone climbs onto its back, its skin turns sticky and traps them, and it plunges into the water to drown its rider. It can stretch its back long enough to carry off several children at once, and even in human form it keeps its hooves, which give it away.
