The kitsune is a fox spirit from Japanese folklore that grows wiser and more powerful the longer it lives. Roughly every hundred years it gains another tail, up to a total of nine, and it can take human form, usually that of a beautiful woman. The good foxes, called zenko, serve the rice god Inari as messengers, while the wild ones, the nogitsune, delight in mischief. Every kitsune can breathe foxfire, a drifting light it uses to guide lost travelers home or to lead them astray.
