The qalupalik waits beneath the sea ice for children who wander too close to the water's edge. She is a water spirit of the Arctic Inuit, with green, slimy skin and long hair like seaweed, and she carries a pouched parka on her back, the kind a mother uses for a baby, except that she fills hers with stolen children. She hums softly under the ice to draw them near. It is a hard land, and this is how its children learn to fear thin ice and open water.
