Among the Navajo, the skinwalker, or yee naaldlooshii, is a witch who has become the exact opposite of a healer. It can take the shape of an animal, most often a coyote, wolf, or bear, sometimes by wearing the creature's own skin, and it uses that power only to do harm. The Navajo speak of it carefully, rarely, and almost never with outsiders. Out of respect for that, this entry says only what may be said: it is real, it is feared, and it is not spoken of lightly.
