The Tatzelwurm haunts the high Alps of Austria, Switzerland, and northern Italy. It is a short, scaly creature with the face of a cat and two clawed front legs, but no hind legs at all, dragging itself out of the rock crevices where it dens. It hisses and whistles in the dark, and its bite, or even its breath, is said to carry poison. According to a famous account from 1779, a farmer named Hans Fuchs met two of them at once and died of the fright.
