Aswang is a general name in Philippine folklore for several kinds of monster, and the province of Capiz is where they are most feared. By day an aswang looks and lives like an ordinary villager, but by night it grows wings and hunts people, preferring pregnant women and infants. It gives itself away with a soft tik-tik or wak-wak call, though the sound grows fainter, not louder, the closer it comes. Spanish colonists recorded it as the most feared creature in the islands as far back as the 16th century.
