A doppelgänger is an exact living double of a person, and to meet one is a terrible omen. The word was coined by the writer Jean Paul in 1796, though the fear behind it is far older. In some accounts the double casts no shadow and shows no reflection, which marks it as something unnatural. Seeing your own doppelgänger is a sign that your death is near, and when a double is seen instead by a friend or relative, it warns that harm is coming to them.
