A ghost train is a phantom locomotive that travels the rails with no engine in sight, giving itself away only by the sound of its whistle, bell, and rumbling wheels. Most ghost trains repeat a journey from the past, replaying a deadly crash or a funeral procession. The most famous of them retraces the route of Abraham Lincoln's 1865 funeral train. To see or hear a ghost train is often an omen of misfortune, and in many places it is believed to carry the souls of the dead toward the afterlife.
