A homunculus is a tiny artificial human, grown in a glass vessel rather than born. The alchemist Paracelsus wrote down the method around 1537: seal human seed in a sealed flask, bury it in horse dung for forty days until it stirs, then feed it human blood for forty more weeks, until a small living infant takes shape. The idea rests on the old alchemical belief that a complete person already lies waiting inside a single seed, needing only warmth and blood to draw it out.
