La Lechuza is a giant owl with the face of an old woman, feared across northern Mexico and South Texas. In life she was a woman herself, wronged or grieving, who made a pact with the devil to take this shape and get her revenge. She lures people out of their homes by imitating a crying baby or a whistle, and she arrives with storms and bad luck. Gunfire does nothing to her, so when the wind turns and something weeps in the yard, you are meant to stay inside.
