The naga is a great serpent from Hindu and Buddhist tradition, half divine and honored across India and Southeast Asia; its name is simply the Sanskrit word for snake. Nagas hold up some of the oldest myths of both religions. When the gods and demons churned the ocean of milk to draw out the nectar of immortality, the naga king Vasuki served as the rope, wound around the mountain and hauled back and forth. In another story, the naga Mucalinda spread his seven hoods over the meditating Buddha to shelter him from a storm.
