The oni is a demon from Japanese folklore, a huge horned brute with fangs and skin of red, blue, or black, usually swinging a heavy iron club. Oni haunt the mountains and the hells, and the greatest of them, Shuten-doji, ruled a whole band of demon-bandits from Mount Oe until a hero cut him down. Every spring, at the festival of Setsubun, families throw roasted soybeans out the door and shout "Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!", meaning "demons out, fortune in." They mean it.
