The qilin is a gentle and auspicious beast from Chinese myth, sometimes called the Chinese unicorn. It has a single horn, the body of a deer, and the scales of a dragon, and it is often shown wreathed in fire or cloud. For all its majesty, it is so gentle that it steps without crushing a single blade of grass or insect, and it never uses its horn against a living thing. The qilin appears only at the best of times, at the birth of a great sage or the reign of a just ruler, and to see one is a sign that the world is in good hands.
