The lusca is a sea monster that lives at the bottom of the blue holes, the deep underwater caves scattered through the Bahamas. It is largest around Andros Island, and it looks like a giant octopus, or in some accounts a cross between an octopus and a shark. It reaches an arm up out of the dark to snatch whatever passes over its hole: a fish, a diver, or a small boat and everyone aboard. The dangerous currents that pull swimmers down into the blue holes are the lusca breathing.
