The Ningen haunts the freezing oceans around Antarctica, where Japanese ships work the coldest waters on earth. Its name means "human," because from a distance that is almost what it looks like: a pale giant twenty or thirty meters long, with five-fingered hands and two black eyes that hold on you far too long. The crews who see it rarely speak of it afterward. There is something deeply wrong about a creature the size of a ship that wears, however faintly, a human face.
