The strix is a bird of the night from Greek and Roman lore, part owl and part bat, and it hunts the cradles of the newborn. It flies into a house in the dark, settles over a sleeping infant, and feeds on its blood and flesh. Often a strix is not a true bird at all, but a person twisted into this shape by malice or a curse. Its name survived into later ages as the striga, the blood-drinking witch of central and eastern Europe.
