The Goatman walks the back roads of Prince George's County, Maryland, between the towns of Beltsville and Bowie, carrying an axe. He is half man and half goat, upright on his hooves, and stories of him have circled the county since the 1950s. According to the most common tale, he was a scientist at a local agricultural research center whose experiment on goats went wrong and left him neither man nor animal. In 1971 he was blamed for a family's dog, found killed and headless, and drivers on those dark roads have watched their mirrors ever since.
