The bukavac is a water demon from the folklore of the South Slavs, remembered especially in the Syrmia region of Serbia. It lives in lakes and ponds and comes out after dark to make a tremendous din, which is how it earned its name, from the Slavic word "buka," meaning noise. Anyone who lingers at the water's edge at night risks the bukavac leaping out of the shallows, seizing them, and strangling them.
