Menace

The Devil Bird, or Ulama, haunts the jungles of Sri Lanka after dark. Its cry sounds almost like a screaming person, and hearing it is taken as a sure sign that a death is coming. According to legend, the bird was once a grieving woman: her husband murdered their child and tricked her into eating the flesh, and her grief was so terrible that the gods turned her into this bird, doomed to scream through the night forever.
