Menace

The griffin has the body of a lion and the head, wings, and talons of an eagle, joining the king of beasts to the king of birds. It appears in the art of the ancient Near East going back more than five thousand years, and Greek writers such as Herodotus described griffins guarding hoards of gold in the mountains of Central Asia. They wage a constant war against the one-eyed Arimaspians, who keep trying to steal that gold. Above all, the griffin is a guardian, and nothing it watches over is ever taken.
