The Katanga Snake is an enormous serpent that lives in the bush of the Katanga region in the Congo. In 1959 a Belgian helicopter crew spotted one from the air, and their pilot, Colonel Remy Van Lierde, judged it to be around forty-five feet long as it reared up beneath them. A snake that size should be impossible to hide. Yet the Katanga bush is vast and dense, and it has hidden this one well.
