The Lubber Fiend, also known as Lob Lie-by-the-Fire, is an English household spirit much like the Scottish brownie. He is a large, strong, hairy man who threshes the corn and handles the heavy farm work at night while the family sleeps. For all that labor he asks only for a bowl of cream and a warm spot by the hearth, where he stretches out to rest by morning. The poet John Milton mentions him in "L'Allegro," written in 1645.
