The pukwudgie is a small creature of the wilderness from the folklore of the Wampanoag people of Massachusetts. It was once a friend to humans, but it grew jealous of the giant Maushop, the people's hero, and turned spiteful; in return, Maushop scattered the pukwudgies across the land. Now they work mischief and worse, appearing and vanishing at will, changing shape, firing poisoned arrows, and luring travelers off cliffs and into deep water. They are said to be thickest in the Massachusetts woods known as the Bridgewater Triangle.
