Menace

The slide-rock bolter is a whale-sized beast that lives in the steep mountains of Colorado. It hooks the grab-hooks of its tail over the crest of a ridge and hangs there, perfectly still, for days, watching the valley below with its huge mouth shut. When something worth eating wanders into the gully, the bolter lets go and comes down the slope like an avalanche, mouth wide open, swallowing everything in its path. It only hunts the steepest ridges, since it needs a slope of more than forty-five degrees to build up speed.
