Menace

The Tlanusi is a monstrous leech, as large as a house and striped in red and white, that lives at a bend in the Valley River in North Carolina. The Cherokee call the spot Tlanusi'yi, the Leech Place. When someone comes near, the Tlanusi heaves the whole river up into a boiling wave and drags them under, and their bodies wash up later with the ears and nose eaten away. One man laughed at the story and stood at the water's edge to prove it false, and the river took him; he was never seen again.
