Menace

A vampire is not a ghost but a corpse that refuses to stay buried. In the folklore of the Slavs and eastern Europe, the recently dead sometimes climb out of the grave, and when such a coffin is opened, the body is found flushed, swollen, and undecayed, fresh with stolen blood. A vampire rises to drain the blood and life from the living, and wherever it walks, people sicken and die of what looks like plague. A bad burial or a wicked life can make one, so the living learned many rituals to hold the dead down in their graves.
