Threat

The axolotl is a salamander that never grows up. While other salamanders lose their gills and move onto land, the axolotl keeps its feathery external gills and spends its whole life in the water, in the lakes and canals of Xochimilco near Mexico City. It can regrow almost any part of itself, including its legs, its spinal cord, its heart, and even parts of its brain, without leaving a scar. The Aztecs named it after Xolotl, their god of the underworld, and today only a few hundred remain in the wild.
