The broonie is a household spirit from Orkney and Shetland, a Scottish cousin of the brownie. It works through the night while the family sleeps, doing the farm chores and the housework, and it asks for nothing but a bowl of milk, cream, or porridge left by the hearth. It is proud, though, and easily offended. If you offer it clothes or insult its work, it leaves for good and takes the household's good luck with it.
