A gargoyle is a stone dragon that guards the rooftops of old churches, and it all began with La Gargouille, a dragon that terrorized the French city of Rouen from the river Seine. La Gargouille breathed water instead of fire, flooding the town at will, until Saint Romanus tamed it with his priest's stole and led it back to be burned. Its body burned, but its head and neck would not, so the people mounted them on a church. To this day, stone gargoyles keep the dragon's habit, carrying rainwater out through their mouths and away from the walls.
