A golem is a giant figure of clay or mud brought to life by holy words. The most famous one was made in sixteenth-century Prague, where Rabbi Judah Loew shaped it from the clay of the Vltava River and animated it with a sacred name to protect the city's Jewish quarter. A golem obeys as long as the name holds. To shut one down, its maker erases a single letter from the Hebrew word emet, meaning "truth," leaving the word met, meaning "death."
