Threat

The hodag lives in the northwoods of Wisconsin, and the town of Rhinelander claims it as its own. It is a bear-sized beast with a fanged, frog-like face and a row of black horns running down its back and tail, and it is fierce enough that the only sure way to kill one is with dynamite. A lumberman named Eugene Shepard first brought word of it in 1893, and by 1896 he was exhibiting a live one at the Oneida County Fair. Rhinelander has treated the hodag as its town mascot ever since.
