The Jersey Devil haunts the Pine Barrens of New Jersey, and its story begins in 1735. A woman remembered only as Mother Leeds, worn out by too many children, cursed her thirteenth before it was born, and the child came out a winged, hooved monster, screamed once, and flew up the chimney into the pines. It has lived in the Barrens ever since, and in the winter of 1909 a wave of sightings swept the whole region. People there still watch the woods and listen for its cry.
