The jiangshi is a walking corpse from Chinese folklore, and its name means "stiff corpse." Its body is locked rigid by death, so it holds its arms straight out in front and travels in slow, stiff hops, which earned it the nickname "hopping vampire." It usually wears the robes of a Qing dynasty official. The legend traces back to a real practice in which priests were said to move corpses over long distances at night, walking the dead home to their villages for burial.
