Threat

The Nian is the beast behind Chinese New Year. At the end of each year it comes down from the mountains or up out of the sea to feed, and it is not choosy: crops, livestock, and people all serve, children first. But the Nian cannot stand the color red, bright fire, or loud noise, so people drive it off with red decorations, lanterns, and firecrackers. The festival's name, guo nian, means "to pass the Nian," and every year the people manage it again.
