The not deer walks the back roads and woods of Appalachia, and at a glance it is only a deer. The wrongness is in the details: legs that bend the wrong way at the joint, a neck that reaches further than it should, and eyes set forward like a person's. It stands upright when it thinks nobody is watching, and it does not startle or bolt the way a real animal does. Drivers who stop for one say the same thing afterward, that it looked back at them and they knew they were not looking at a deer.
