Threat

The ogre is the man-eating giant of European fairy tales, huge and brutish and hungry above all for children. He turns up wherever a story needs a monster with an appetite, from "Puss in Boots" to "Hansel and Gretel." The French writer Charles Perrault fixed his familiar shape in the late seventeenth century, but the name is far older, worn down from Orcus, a Roman god of the underworld. There is still a good deal of that death-god in the ogre waiting at the top of the beanstalk.
