The squonk lives in the hemlock forests of Pennsylvania, and it is the saddest creature in the woods. It is so ashamed of its own loose, warty skin that it weeps constantly, and a hunter can track one just by following its tear-stained trail. Catching it does no good, though. In the famous story, a man coaxes a squonk into a sack and starts home, only for the crying to fall silent along the way; when he opens the bag, he finds nothing inside but bubbles and tears, the squonk having dissolved itself entirely in weeping.
