The thunderbird is an enormous sky spirit from the traditions of Indigenous North America, strongest among the peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast. It is a bird of prey so vast that the carvers of the Northwest show it lifting a whale in its talons. Thunder is the beating of its wings, and lightning is the flash of its eyes. It rules the sky and wages war on the monsters of the water below, and it is honored as a protector that brings the rains and storms the world depends on.
