The wapaloosie is a small creature of the Pacific Northwest forests, and climbing is the only thing it knows how to do. Its clawed feet grip like a woodpecker's, letting it inch up a tree trunk the way an inchworm crosses a leaf, feeding on the shelf-fungus that grows at every height. Its urge to climb does not even stop at death. In the story, a lumberjack skins one and sews the hide into mittens, only for the mittens to keep climbing on their own, crawling up every axe handle he owns until he throws them away.
