The water hound is the Irish Dobhar-chú, a giant otter the size of a man and far fiercer, also known as the King Otter. A single inch of its hide is worth killing for, since it is said to protect a ship from sinking and its owner from harm, but killing one is dangerous work. The Dobhar-chú hunt in pairs, and a wounded one lets out a whistle that carries for miles, calling its mate to come and take revenge. In 1722 one killed a woman named Grace Connolly at Glenade Lake, and her gravestone still bears a carving of the beast.
